    Anyone play the larger maps...?

Has anyone played a multiplayer game on a map larger than 20km x 20km?  I have a Core 2 Duo 1.86 and 2gb of RAM and even the 20 by 20's seem to run pretty sluggish.  I'm curious to know how big of a map people have played and what they're running under the hood (or case)?

It's such a shame they didnt' make 30x30 maps.

Sometimes 20x20 seems a tad too small, yet the 40x40 ones run to a crawl on my computer

Oh well :-( time to upgrade I guess :-(

If you crawl through the gpgnet forums, I think you'll see that you have the bare minimum for a 20x20, especially if any AIs are involved. Typical set up seems to be quad-core with minimum 2gigs mem. for more than 4 people at once on a 20x20 running under XP (need slightly more to compensate for Vista). I would think that you should be fine on a 20x20 map with four or less people and a unit limit of 500. If you are running AIs, only decent fix I know of is to download Duncane's or Sorian's AIs. They hold out better late game as far as performance.

As for myself, I'm running an outdated system so stick to only 10x10 or smaller maps with other people (namely I play ranked games or small multiplayer games over gpgnet). I can hardly handle a single AI skirmish on a 10x10 with a 500 unit limit late game (drop to -2 or -3).

Single core Pentium IV OCd to 4.0

    2.0gigs ram

    ATI 1950 pro (also OCd)

    Windows XP

40x40 / 81x81 would be a slide show or slow motion fest with less than high clocked Quad Core with AI involved. Not sure with just human players

From personal experiance I can tell you 40x40 maps on a Q6600 @ 3.6 will slow down to about -3 with 2 human players and 1 Sorian AI (1000unit cap) when the units hit around 1600 - 2000. 81x81 hits -3 or -5ish at about the same unit count level (1600 - 2000)

Frame rate at this point on a GTX260 isnt great either....20 - 30 while hosting 1x Sorian AI

Hope that clears some things up.

Bring on Intel Core i7 !!

...I wonder if SumCom will scale up with Oct Cores (core i7) or can it only thread to 4 cores max....
